Agnes DeMille spent her whole life wanting to be a ballerina and working tirelessly to become one.
But her teachers said she "wasn't built quite right" and didn't have the kind of body they expected of a ballerina.
DeMille studied English in college, but she couldn't put her passion aside.
As a student at UCLA, she staged a performance of her own for her fellow students.
After she finished her self-choreographed one-woman show, DeMille asked a friend if, finally, she was a dancer.
The friend responded, saying "No, you are not a dancer. You are an artist."
