Historic Burial Site Unearthed

http://ipraudio.interlochen.org/MackinacGraves.mp3

Last week construction workers on Mackinac Island unearthed bones from what appears to be a historic grave site. The McNally Cottage was bulldozed to make room for a hotel. But the excavating disturbed human remains that had likely been there for more than 150 years. Members of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians believe these are their ancestors and are planning to rebury the remains. Brian Dunnigan is a historian at the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. He’s done extensive research about Mackinac Island and says the property is near the former site of St. Annes Catholic Church.
