Coffee With The Authors is a live, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On May 18 Brittany Cavallaro, the author of seven Young Adult [YA] novels, explains this stand-alone genre, and how she approaches it. Sarah Bearup-Neal, GAAC gallery manager, leads the conversation, which begins at 11 am.
Cavallaro is a creative writing instructor at the Interlochen Arts Academy, her alma mater [her New York Times bestselling Charlotte Holmes series is set in a boarding school]. YA fiction is geared to readers ages 12 to 18 years, but it tackles mature themes and subjects the sets it apart from traditional middle school literature. Cavallaro is also the author of three volumes of poetry, and frequently collaborates with other writers.
Coffee With The Authors is offered without charge. The program is supported by the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St., Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org/EVENTS.
The training begins with a general orientation at 1 pm, which is applicable for all volunteers, both experienced and new. For those unable to attend, we will be streaming and recording the general session. More information on this option will be available later.
Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes volunteers logged over 11,000 hours in 2023 through twelve Friends organized programs including Adopt-A-Beach, Adopt-A-Trail, and Adopt-A-River. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated Friends volunteers, 2,360 pounds of trash was collected by Adopt-A-Beach volunteers, and 2,905 hours were logged on the Sleeping Bear Dunes trails by volunteers keeping visitors safe and cleaning the park trails. The Preventive Search and Rescue team made over 30,000 contacts with visitors making sure they are prepared for distance hikes within the park. Friends volunteers also maintain the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail; grooming it for cross-country skiing in the winter and blowing off debris, fixing erosion, and removing downed trees during the hiking and biking seasons. More information on volunteer opportunities with the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, can be found at friendsofsleepingbear.org.

Local kid Bernie Rosendahl’s modern crusade to restore the historic arthouse to its former glory leads filmmakers to discover a hidden cinema empire in the Upper Peninsula.
Portraying the fascinating history of motion pictures through one iconic screen - and featuring dozens of real-life Marquette locations and characters - Marqueetown is the true story of chasing your dreams, redefining failure and success, and reembracing the enduring magic of cinema.
