Unusual Spring Experience

Unusual Spring Experience

Join us to explore the universally accessible Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy Looyenga Family Trail at Mitchell Creek Meadows: The Don and Jerry Oleson Nature Preserve. Stewardship Staff member Steve Laguerquist will highlight the impact on flora and fauna in our region due to changes in temperature and precipitation.

The Basics
This is a tour of our 1.6-mile universally accessible trail that will take about 1.5 hours. The site features multiple restoration projects, including Mitchell Creek tributaries, invasive species removal, a dune garden, and native plant landscaping. Come prepared with water and a snack. Although the trail does not go through the woods or tall grasses, we recommend wearing long pants, toe-covered shoes, and a tick check at the journey's end. What should I bring? Consider bringing your camera or binoculars. Dress for the weather! Always check the forecast in advance. Sunscreen and bug spray for your safety and comfort.

Description
Many species in northern Michigan, both resident and migratory, depend on regular seasonal cues to survive and thrive in our northern climate. One of these cues is the typical volume of snowfall. Various plants and animals rely on snow cover until the average temperature rises significantly day and night. When temperatures rise too early, there can be numerous consequences, many of which are harmful. During this excursion, we will explore some of the effects of this year’s unusually warm winter on our region’s wildlife.
