Notes from Home: Gohar Vardanyan

Although many classical guitarists wear funky socks that they show off while using a foot rest, Gohar Vardanyan isn't one of them. She usually performs wearing gowns, and socks don't exactly go with that wardrobe.

Vardanyan joined Classical IPR via Zoom from her home in New York City to discuss teaching during the pandemic.

Since she already had several students taking lessons by Skype before the Coronavirus crisis, she says she already had some experience with the "two-dimensional communication" that happens during online lessons. Vardanyan also explained why she'd never risk teaching a lesson while wearing a nice shirt on the top and pajamas on the bottom.

Vardanyan explained why she never really feels starstruck when she's around famous people, whether they were her school classmates or her teachers (including Sharon Isbin and Manuel Barrueco).

She performed "Milonga" by Jorge Cardoso. Scroll down for video of the performance.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
