Grammy Award-winning conductor Cristian Măcelaru and the WDR Sinfonieorchester will join Interlochen Online this summer as part of the virtual camp offerings.

Măcelaru is the inaugural Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Interlochen’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO), Chief Conductor of the WDR Sinfonieorchester, Music Director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and Music Director Designate of the Orchestre National de France.

According to a press release, Măcelaru will lead the string section of the WDR Sinfonieorchester in a recording of the final movement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. Interlochen students will be able to study and practice along with the orchestra's recording.

Măcelaru will also conduct students in a virtual performance of Franz Liszt's "Les preludes," the piece that has concluded the Interlochen Arts Camp season every year since 1928.

This announcement follows Interlochen's decision last month to move its 2020 summer arts camp online.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
