Notes from Home: Clara Warnaar

Like a lot of professional musicians, Clara Warnaar has struggled to feel excited about performing music during these uncertain times.

Warnaar, who is a drummer, percussionist and composer/producer, has been spending a lot of time in the kitchen lately.

Unexpectedly, she began finding musical inspiration in the sounds of the kitchen appliances, mixing bowls and pots and pans.

Working with the program Ableton, Warnaar combined the sounds of her kitchen percussion instruments with a "keyboard" of vocal sounds she had created from samples of her friends' voices.

The resulting work, "A Walk in Silver Glass Garden," was completed the same day as her conversation with IPR and can be heard in the interview.

As a percussionist, Warnaar has performed with Sō Percussion and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE). She's also the drummer in the band Infinity Shred.

Warnaar has appeared on a number of recent film music soundtracks, including "The Fate of the Furious" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles."

Another recent project is called "A New Age for New Age."

As Warnaar explained, New Age music can elicit a variety of responses, ranging from confusion to disgust to admiration. She invited a variety of musicians to re-envision the concept of New Age music for the 21st century.

Listen to her entire conversation with Classical IPR below.
