Interlochen Public Radio wins “Best Music Feature” in international radio program competition

Interlochen Public Radio has won a Bronze Medal for Best Music Feature from the 2018 New York Festivals International Radio Program Competition, honoring its work with the New York Philharmonic and the University of Michigan’s University Musical Society in the broadcast: “Interlochen Presents: The New York Philharmonic Live!, from the University Musical Society.”

Taking place during the New York Philharmonic’s fall 2017 residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the broadcast featured Detroit Symphony Orchestra Music Director Leonard Slatkin, soprano Tamara Wilson, and narrator Jeremy Irons, in Leonard Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3, “Kaddish,” with a chorus consisting of the UMS Choral Union directed by Scott Hanoian and the Michigan State University Children’s Choir directed by Kyle Zeuch. Evoking the chanted Jewish prayer of mourning, the symphony was written in 1963 and is dedicated to the memory of John F. Kennedy, who was assassinated just weeks before the first performance. Also on the program was Richard Strauss’s witty tone poem Don Quixote for cello, viola and orchestra, featuring the New York Philharmonic’s Principal Cello Carter Brey and Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps.
