New Release of the Week: 'Final Thoughts'

“Final Thoughts” is the newest release from Cedille Records. It features Jorge Federico Osorio performing the final solo piano works of Franz Schubert (1797-1828) and Johannes Brahms (1833-1897). A trailer for “Final Thoughts” can be viewed here.

The pieces on the album offer a study in contrasts. Schubert’s final two piano sonatas are massive, each about 40 minutes in duration. The Schubert sonatas are unusual because they are in four movements, not three. Brahms’s late piano music consisted primarily of sets of miniatures, including Seven Fantasies (op. 116) and Three Intermezzos (op. 117). The Brahms pieces are frequently performed both separately and as complete sets.

This is the seventh album that Osorio has recorded for Cedille. Osorio is well known as a solo pianist and in his work with major orchestras. In early 2018, he will present the complete cycle of Beethoven piano concertos with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Osorio currently serves on the music faculty at Roosevelt University’s Chicago College of Performing Arts.

Detailed liner notes by WFMT’s Andrea Lamoreaux guide the listener through the form and style of each piece on the album.
