In Studio A with Tony Yates

On Friday night, the NMC Concert Band is giving a concert called "Crooning and Swooning."

The crooning will be provided by guest vocalist Tony Yates.

"I'm not sure who will be swooning, though," he said.

Yates got this gig in northern Michigan because his father met NMC Concert Band conductor Pat Brumbaugh at a local coffee shop.

"My parents relocated to Traverse City about five years ago, and my dad has made it a point to talk to every single resident of Traverse City since he moved here," he said, laughing.

Yates visited IPR's Studio A to give a preview of Friday night's concert.

With pianist Steve Stargardt, he performed "Just in Time," a song by Jule Styne that has been popular with crooners including Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Michael Bublé.

Yates and Brumbaugh clarified that music of Michael Bublé will be featured and not music of Justin Bieber - at least on this concert.

Tony Yates will perform with the NMC Concert "Big Band" Friday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Milliken Auditorium in Traverse City.

This edition of Studio A was engineered by Michael Culler.
