In Studio A with the Dalbergia Quintet

Nancy Stagnitta

The Dalbergia Quintet's members are students at Interlochen Arts Academy.

They picked their quintet's name because Dalbergia is the scientific name of the kind of wood used to make oboes and clarinets.

Quintet members
Julia Benitez-Nelson, flute, South Carolina
Orly Lindner, oboe, Washington State
Brooks Wisniewski, horn, Wisconsin
Luke Pancoast, bassoon, Oregon
Nathan Soto, clarinet, Florida

They performed Valerie Coleman's "Umoja."

"Umoja" means "unity," and it's the principle celebrated on the first day of Kwanzaa each year.

You can hear this ensemble and other Interlochen Arts Academy students in the Woodwind Chamber Music Honors Recital on Monday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. It takes place in the Dendrinos Chapel and Recital Hall, and admission is free. Learn more here.

The Dalbergia Quintet is coached by Nancy Stagnitta.

Stefan Wiebe engineered this edition of Studio A.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
