On June 5, the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra will perform at Lincoln Center for the New York Philharmonic biennial.  The biennial is a festival dedicated to new music and the students will not be playing standard repertoire. There are two world premieres commissioned for the performance and two NY premieres all by young American composers. The Arts Academy Dance Company will also accompany one of the works in choreography commissioned for the event.  Between now and then, the composers, choreographer and guest conductor will be working with students here at Interlochen, preparing the program for their trip to New York. Come with us on this special series from IPR's Studio A as we join the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra and Dance Company on the road to New York.

This week we feature Ashley Fure, an award-winning composer and former Interlochen student.  Her most recent awards include a Grant from the Foundation for the Contemporary Arts (2016) and a Composer's Portrait at the Miller Theater in NY (2016). Fure has received the Julius F. Ježek Prize in Composition (2011) and a Staubach Honorarium for Composition (2012) from The Harry and Alice Eiler Foundation. She held a ten-month residency at Akademie Schloss Solitude (2012) and was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Student Program scholarship to France in Music Composition (2013-2014). In 2014 she received the Kranichsteiner Musikpreis from Internationales Musinkinstitut Darmstadt and the Busoni Competition Prize from Akademie der Künste, Berlin.

She holds a PhD in Music Composition from Harvard University and further degrees from IRCAM (Cursus 1 and 2), and Oberlin Conservatory. Fure was a Mellon Post-doctoral Fellow at Columbia University in 2014 and joined the Dartmouth College Department of Music as an Assistant Professor of Sonic Arts in September 2015.

Ashley sat down with IPR host Meg Gruits to talk about her compositions, her work with the students and her memories of Interlochen.
