State Rep. Betsy Coffia is recovering from surgery to remove cancer and a brain tumor.

Writing on Facebook, Coffia said the brain tumor was a recurrence from a tumor she had surgery for some five years ago.

The cancer, she said, is a separate diagnosis and “very rare.”

"I'm incredibly thankful that advances in medical science since my craniotomy in 2020 have meant a more targeted and localized surgery was possible," she wrote, adding that the procedures went smoothly at the University of Michigan Hospital and that her prognosis is positive.

Coffia said she’ll take some time to recover and hopes to return to full capacity as soon as possible.

The 47-year-old Democrat was elected to the state House in 2022 and represents Michigan’s 103rd District, which includes Traverse City, all of Leelanau County and part of Benzie County.
