A stretch of M-137 in Interlochen, also known as J. Maddy Parkway, will close for three weeks in August.

Interlochen Center for the Arts is building a tunnel to connect the two sides of its campus, which straddles the road.

Eric Gray is Interlochen’s executive director of facilities and maintenance.

“Golf carts, pedestrians, bicycles will all be able to use the tunnel," he said. "A little bit of pain during the construction, but we’ll alleviate that issue of needing to cross the road there.”

The 18-foot tunnel could improve safety for people frequently traveling between both sides of campus. It will also alleviate the need for traffic to stop on the busy road every time someone needs to cross.

J. Maddy Parkway will close between the two entrances to campus on Aug. 6. Traffic will still be able to access the campus from either direction.

Wider detours will be posted for through traffic. The road is expected to re-open on Aug. 31, with the goal of finishing the whole project by October.
