The Week Ahead: Forest damage, cougars and buds on trees

This week we look at forest damage caused by a recent ice storm Up North, talk about the return of cougars to the Great Lakes states, and ideas for your summer garden.

The Week Ahead takes listeners behind the scenes every Monday to hear what IPR journalists have their eyes and ears on.

Trees and ice

IPR's Ellie Katz has been visiting the storm-damaged areas of northern Michigan to talk to people raising trees for harvest, maple syrup producers and others about damage to the forest service.

About 100 trees per acre are damaged or destroyed, according to some estimates. When you consider the whole storm area, that could mean millions of trees damaged or destroyed.

Her story will be out this week.

Cougar cubs

Dan Wanschura, meanwhile, is following the news that two cougar cubs were found in the Upper Peninsula. It's the first time that's happened in the western Great Lakes states in more than a century.

Cougars are better known for their presence in the Great Plains and western states, so it surprised many that the first instance in our region was Michigan — instead of a closer place like Minnesota or Wisconsin.

Dan and the Points North crew brought out an episode from 2023 to explore the world of big cat sightings, and update based on the news of the cubs here in Michigan.

Also this week...

Pints North: Maybe the cougar story will help you (or maybe it won't; we're not giving hints!) in the final two Pints North trivia events. Look for the crew at the Cheboygan Brewing Co., on Thursday. Then on Earth Day, find them at the Cherry Public House in Glen Arbor. These are the last two events of Season 3!

Grow & Tell: The second episode of IPR's new gardening segment comes out on Friday. Join Dylan Kulik in the garden. The upcoming episode talks about companion plants to tomatoes and bee balm, which were covered in the segment's premiere. Listen for Grow & Tell on alternating Fridays, including this week's, during "Morning Edition" and "All Things Considered."
