Grand Traverse County approves funding for year-round Safe Harbor

Commissioners provided the last piece of a funding puzzle for a shelter serving people experiencing homelessness. Safe Harbor hopes to expand its services beyond the current October-to-April season.

The expansion to yearround services is a response to an encampment along 11th Street in Traverse City known as "The Pines," says Beth Milligan, head writer for The Traverse Ticker.

That takes staffing and, therefore, money — about $1.1 million. Safe Harbor has been lining up that funding from various community groups.

Commissioners approved $400,000 spread over two years.

"That was really the last big funding commitment they were looking for to be able to go forward with this project," Milligan said.
