'Underwater' stroll

The pedestrian tunnel beneath U.S. 31 has a new look.

It's the same tunnel where a piano mysteriously appeared back in May of 2023. Unlike the piano, this public artwork was solicited, and artist Kevin Burdick (Instagram) was chosen for the job.

The enormous, colorful work has an underwater theme and depicts fish that all live in Michigan waters, from salmon and steelhead to perch and large-mouth bass.

IPR's Michael Livingston went for a stroll through the tunnel and recorded his impressions, as well as those of passersby.

This story has been updated to reflect that some species of fish depicted in the mural live in Michigan waters but are not native to our region.
Michael Livingston covered the area around the Straits of Mackinac — including Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego counties — from 2022 to 2025, through Report for America.
