Bus riders in Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties will see some expanded service and new technology in the next couple weeks.

BATA, the Bay Area Transportation Authority says that starting June 26, buses will run until 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Additionally, on-demand Link service will be available to BATA’s entire service area and the agency will debut a new app for on-demand riders.

“They can just request a bus when they need one,” said Eric Lingaur, communications and development director for the transit agency. “It’s really intuitive and matches their transportation patterns from that perspective.”

Shoppers and others will also find a new route — City Loop Route 7 — traveling along the busy retail corridor between Meijer on U.S. 31 and a residential area on Garfield, south of South Airport Road.

And passengers will also have access to real-time bus tracking, so they can see how far away the bus might be. It’s available now on a website and through certain apps, as well as Google Maps.

“All of these changes are trying to get us back to pre-pandemic levels,” Lingaur said.

Heading into 2020, BATA had more than 560,000 riders over the course of the year — a record. When COVID hit, ridership dropped off dramatically.

But it’s coming back. Lingaur says this year, they expect more than 400,000 riders.
