Army Corps delays key Line 5 determination; it's now 2 years away

It will be 2025 before the Army Corps of Engineers weighs in on a controversial proposal to build a tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac.

Enbridge Energy wants to build the tunnel to house a replacement section of Line 5.

Right now that pipeline carries crude oil and natural gas liquids along the lakebed.

The Army Corps had originally planned to publish a draft environmental impact statement on the project later this year.

That statement will be key in determining whether Enbridge can proceed with the tunnel project at all.

On Thursday, the Army Corps said it revised the timeline to allow for a more thorough review of the issue.

The project has been met with protests for years, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration is fighting in court to shut down Line 5 entirely.
