Blue skies, mild temps bring crowds to annual Mackinac Bridge Walk

A crowd of people streams in both directions, on opposite sides of the Mackinac Bridge, whose towers loom high overhead.

Some 26,000 people made the on-foot trip across the Straits of Mackinac.

That's according to the Mackinac Bridge Authority. The turnout is an uptick from last year, but not a record. The annual event usually brings 20,000 to 30,000 people.

Officials say the weather was a big factor in seeing more walkers this year.

The event has happened every year since 1958, except 2020, when it was canceled because of the pandemic.
