Look up! The next few nights could be great for seeing northern lights

Spend some time outside for the next few days, and you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

The National Weather Service predicts a strong geomagnetic storm sometime between Wednesday and Friday nights.

The forecast calls for some clouds in the sky each of the next few nights, with Thursday possibly bringing some thunderstorms near Traverse City. The National Weather Service in Gaylord says the eastern parts of northern Michigan will see less cloud cover.

The bright, dancing lights are caused by particles from the sun colliding with Earth’s atmosphere. The best way to spot them is to get to an area with as little light pollution as possible, and look north.

Michael Livingston covers the area around the Straits of Mackinac - including Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Emmet and Otsego counties as a Report for America corps member.
