This weekend, the Gaylord Community Orchestra takes the stage in a concert entitled "Two Romantic Masters."

The program includes Franz Schubert's "Unfinished" Symphony no. 8 and Antonin Dvorak's Cello Concerto.

Music director Jim Van Eizenga spoke to Classical IPR about the ensemble and the concert.

The Gaylord Community Orchestra's members are volunteers who live anywhere from Traverse City to Alpena.

Van Eizenga says that their members include retirees who are returning to music after a long time away, college students from Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University and people with music degrees but who may not be professional musicians.

This program will also include a high school musician: the concerto soloist is Novi High School senior Evelyn Cho.

She was the principal cellist of the All State Orchestra this year.

Van Eizenga, who is also the Director of Orchestras at Novi High school, has known Evelyn throughout her high school years.

"She makes me a better teacher," Van Eizenga said. "I have to be better in order to teach someone at her level."

The Gaylord Community Orchestra concert featuring Evelyn Cho is Saturday, May 14 in Gornick Auditorium at Gaylord High School.

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m., and music director Jim Van Eizenga will give a pre-concert talk starting at 7 p.m.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
