In a new biography, Paul LaPorte offers a more complete picture of the man who became known as Father Fred.
Edwin Frederick was born in Grand Rapids in 1925, entered seminary at 14 years old and was sent north in 1959, assigned to be chaplain at the Traverse City State Hospital.
For the next 30 years he ministered to the hospital's residents in a way that nobody else ever had. And when the state announced the hospital was closing, he began the foundation that still bears his name.
Father Fred passed-away in 2000.
A special publication event is scheduled for 7 o'clock on the evening of September 22 at the Milliken Auditorium in Traverse City. More information at www.fatherfredbook.com.
