The group that runs the Bayview-to-Mackinac yacht race is warning of serious problems if ferry service to Mackinac Island is monopolized. The head of the annual regatta says putting Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry out of business would hurt his event.
For 86 years, yachts have raced from Port Huron to Mackinac Island. Race organizers say about 200 boats compete and it brings more than 5,000 people to the Island.
Bayview Yacht Commodore Bruce Burton says Shepler's is a sponsor of the event and its employees put in many volunteer hours.
Shepler's would go out of business if island officials accept a proposal from Arnold Transit to monopolize ferry service in the straits.
Burton says Mackinac Island is expensive, and Shepler's support is a huge help. He says they don't want to see the ferry company out of business.
Arnold Transit says it can lower the price of a ferry ticket if it has exclusive rights to service the island.
A letter penned to city leaders seems to intimate the race could look for another finish line, if Arnold's plan goes through. Play the audio above for Peter Payette's chat on this issue with All Things Considered Host Linda Stephan.
