Money is going to efforts to conserve waterfront in Elberta, restore Arctic grayling to rivers and reforest northern Michigan after the ice storm.

By some estimates, tens of millions of trees could be damaged.

The proposal was originally discussed at an October board meeting.

This comes as Leelanau County — and much of the region — faces a housing shortage that affects teacher recruitment and retention.

The Grand Traverse County Road Commission voted Tuesday night to keep a state forest access road open, in response to a petition from High Pointe Golf Club to abandon it.

In Acme Township near Traverse City, the public may lose access to a seasonal section of Arnold Road, which leads to hundreds of acres of state forest near the VASA trail system. The Grand Traverse County Road Commission is being asked — by nearby golf course High Pointe and the DNR —to abandon the last half mile of Arnold Road, which is currently a public right of way.
