In August 1940, Interlochen's National Music Camp had a very special guest.
Frederick Stock had been the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1905, and he helped turn that orchestra into one of the nation's best.
This 1940 visit wasn't the first time Stock had worked with Joe Maddy and the National High School Orchestra, though.
In April 1928, just a few months before the very first National Music Camp season, Maddy took a student orchestra to Chicago to perform at the Music Supervisors National Conference. There, Stock conducted that orchestra in a performance of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony no. 9 "From the New World."
