Traverse City is hosting the first annual Michigan Space Forum on Friday. The event at Northwestern Michigan College will promote the state’s space industry.

“We have all of the resources necessary ... to play a significant part in the space industry writ large,” says Mike Carey, the chief strategy officer for Traverse City company Atlas Space Operations.

Carey says the business provides communication services for satellites.

Atlas Space Operations helped organize the forum.

Carey says the space industry is growing across the country.

“Many states like California, Texas, Colorado, New Mexico, Virginia and Kentucky for that matter have already staked their claim and their role in the space industry,” Carey says. “Michigan has yet to do so.”

On Saturday, there is an expo for students to explore science and technology careers.

Former NASA astronaut Greg Johnson will speak Saturday night.
