Mahogany Jones says there was a time when rap and hip hop didn’t have the negative connotations like violence and misogyny. She says the music was about peace, love, and being a voice for the voiceless.
That’s the legacy Jones wants her music to reflect. She travels the world using her music as a way to empower others.
“I make music because I feel like I’m creating and I’m saying things that other people may not be able to say, or are afraid to say,” she explains.
Mahogany Jones will be in Traverse City on Monday night, performing at the annual Martin Luther King celebration at the State Theatre.
