The Week Ahead: Improving the Grand Traverse Co. jail, and the end of 'skibidi'?

Introducing a new segment airing every Monday on IPR News Radio.

At the start of the week, Morning Edition host Tyler Thompson will be joined by a member of the IPR newsroom as we take a look at the week ahead, preview some stories we're covering, and discuss some other news that's piqued our interest from outside the IPR newsroom.

This week's installment features IPR's news director, Ed Ronco.

In case you missed it ...

... The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians has officially gained ownership of a 187-acre piece of land in Leelanau County. It was once the Timber Shores campground and later eyed for a luxury condo development and an RV campground. But before that, it was the epicenter of Ojibwe and Odawa villages whose descendants later formed the Grand Traverse Band, according to a report on the site’s history. The land’s new name is Mashkiigaki, which means marsh lands and place of the medicine. Read about the plans for the land, in a story from IPR's Ellie Katz.

Coming up...

... IPR contributor Max Howard will have a story this week about the Grand Traverse County Jail. For years, there have been conversations about improvements to the jail facility itself. The county's sheriff, Mike Shea, is among those pushing for the changes. We'll explore some of the problems at the jail and hear why plans for upgrades are not moving forward.

We're watching to see ...

... what the impact of Michigan's two minimum wage hikes might be in 2025. Almost certainly there will be an impact on the restaurant industry. What that looks like, though, remains to be seen. The state plans to phase out the lower minimum wage for tipped workers altogether by 2030. It's unclear whether a new state Legislature could affect those plans.

We noticed ...

... that Lake Superior State University's annual Banished Words List is out. The list compiles 10 things that should be permanently retired from speech and text. Among them? "Cringe," as an adjective; "100%" to signal emphatic agreement; and "skibidi," whatever the heck that means.

Have thoughts?
