Plans move forward for Amazon warehouse to be built in Gaylord

Construction will soon be underway for a new Amazon distribution center in the City of Gaylord.

The building will fill nearly eight acres of land in the Gaylord Industrial Park located about a mile west of I-75.

Gaylord City Manager Kim Awrey said the project has already been approved by the planning commission and city council. She said Amazon received no tax breaks that she's aware of.

"I think [Amazon] was attracted by the centralized location of Gaylord," she said.

Republican state Rep. Ken Borton (R-Gaylord) said in a statement the project will bring new jobs and economic growth to the area.

"The folks working there will have to buy homes. Then they’ll send their kids to our schools. They’ll shop at our grocery stores and dine at local restaurants," Borton said. "The more you think about how much projects like this add to our community, the more excited you get.”

Amazon has also opened warehouses in other areas of Michigan, including Livonia and Saginaw.

The Gaylord Industrial Park site was established in the early 2000s to attract large business to the area, according to Awrey.

She said she's unsure of when the building will be complete but that the lot was clearcut shortly after the project was approved.
