Notes from Home: Jeff and Sophie Haas

Sophie Haas hasn't been able to hug her father Jeff since the middle of March.

The two are keeping a safe distance from each other during the pandemic, maintaining contact with calls, texts and a weekly "window meeting."

They joined Classical IPR via Zoom to talk about what it's like being apart from each other right now.

Sophie, a senior at Traverse City Central High School, said the abrupt end of her school year has been "jarring."

She's eagerly awaiting the opportunity to get some closure to her senior year - not to mention a lunch combo at Paesano's with her friends.

Jeff performed "Anticipating the Arrival," a piece he wrote in December of 2001, two weeks before Sophie's birth.

He explained that writing the music helped him express some of the anxiety he felt about become a father for the first time at the age of 52, not to mention how he felt about welcoming a child into the world so soon after 9/11.

Jeff shared what happened to him as a teenager that made him promise to never turn off the radio when Sophie was listening to pop music.
