Luis Villa and Davis Morgenstern are both seniors at Interlochen Arts Academy. They're both pianists who study with Michael Coonrod. And they visited IPR's Studio A together to perform etudes by 20th-century Russian composers.

Luis Villa is from Mexico City and is in his third year at Interlochen Arts Academy.

He performed the Étude-Tableau in C minor (op. 33, no. 1) by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

Luis says he started learning this piece as a passion project and not because it was assigned to him, but now it's become part of his repertoire.

Davis Morgenstern is from Wyoming and is in his fourth year at Interlochen Arts Academy.

He performed the Concert etude "Pastoral" (op. 40, no. 6) by Nikolai Kapustin.

Davis said he really enjoys the syncopation and rhythmic creativity of this piece, and it looks pretty intimidating on paper because it's mostly sharps and flats.

Stefan Wiebe engineered this edition of Studio A. Thanks to Michael Coonrod for support.

Davis Morgenstern will be featured in this year's Collage concert at Interlochen Arts Academy. Click here for more information and tickets for the October 1 show.

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
