Founding member Joshua Davis talks with IPR about Steppin' In It's upcoming shows in Traverse City.

The band Steppin' In It has been playing together for over 20 years. They first got together in Lansing, when founding members Joe Wilson and Andy Wilson were working at Elderly Instruments.

The band's lineup includes Andy Wilson, Joe Wilson, Joshua Davis, Dominic Davis, Geoff Lewis and Mike Lynch.

Interlochen Public Radio spoke with Joshua Davis, a founding member of Steppin' In It. Davis was also a 2015 finalist on NBC's "The Voice" and is currently a faculty member in the Singer-Songwriter program at Interlochen Arts Academy.

The musicians of Steppin' In It make it a point to get together for a tour once a year, even though they have all gone in different directions and have many other musical and professional projects.

"These are people that I grew up with musically," Davis explained. "They're some of my best friends, and they're people that I learned how to play music with."

Steppin' In It performs Wednesday, Jan. 8 and Thursday, Jan. 9 at Milliken Auditorium in Traverse City. Learn more and get tickets here.

Zak Bunce opens for the group Wednesday, and Thursday's opening act features students from the Interlochen Arts Academy Popular Music Ensemble.

This is the first time that the Interlochen Arts Academy Popular Music Ensemble has opened for Steppin' In It. The students were required to attend the show last year, but this year, they'll be part of it.

"I think it's really important for the students to get off campus and play in front of a crowd that's not necessarily a bunch of their peers," Davis said. "As performing and touring musicians, we get used to playing in different spaces and for different audiences every night when we're on tour, and I think it's going to be a great learning experience for the students."

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
