In early 2020, at the outset of the pandemic, Dave Ader Albertson became focused on exploring our past.

He took up metal detecting around Petoskey and focused on places where he could find relics from the city’s early days. In doing so, Albertson got a glimpse into the region from roughly 100 years ago, when the country reeled from its last major pandemic. Independent reporter Patrick Sullivan has the story.

Listen to the story through the audio player above. It comes from IPR's Story School, a 10-week program led by independent producer Juliet Hinley. Eight storytelling enthusiasts from around Northern Michigan learned how to pitch stories, record interviews, work with audio editing equipment and produce an edited, narrated final story.

The finished pieces aired in a special presentation on Interlochen Public Radio. Listen to the whole program here.
