By Bob Allen

Traverse City's electric utility wants to build a community-scale solar-power project. A spokesman for Traverse City Light and Power says it's possible to have it up and running by next spring.

The program would mean a number of customers buying into one big solar array instead of financing their own projects on many rooftops.

In other cities, customers pay an up-front cost to buy a part of the solar array. Whatever that portion generates in electricity is credited on their bill.

The program also could work with customers paying a monthly fee or surcharge.

At recent forums, people have told Light and Power they'd be willing to pay extra to support green energy.
