In Studio A with the Interlochen Arts Academy Cello Choir

Amanda Sewell

Technically, we weren't actually in Studio A for this session. There are 18 musicians in the Interlochen Arts Academy cello choir, so they simply wouldn't fit in IPR's Studio A. As a result, we recorded this session during their rehearsal in Corson Auditorium.

Patrick Owen, instructor of cello at Interlochen Arts Academy

Patrick Owen is the instructor of cello at Interlochen Arts Academy. Although it's his first year teaching here, he's no stranger to Interlochen - he attended both Interlochen Arts Camp and Interlochen Arts Academy.

Owen spoke briefly with IPR about how he ended up at Interlochen. He also explained that most pieces for cello ensemble have only four parts, but because the current ensemble is so large, they're able to play pieces with up to 12 different parts.

The ensemble performed "Hymnus" by Julius Klengel, with special guest conductor Matthew Schlomer. Hear their entire performance and Patrick Owen's interview with IPR's Amanda Sewell below.

The members of the Interlochen Arts Academy cello ensemble are Zoe Bell, Ella Bondar, Esther Chae, Alexis DePaolo, Tevyanazstazia Emoedi, Daniela Gonzales, Tu Gu, Audrey Jellett, Julian Naimon, Caroline Quinones De La Cruz, Eric Rice, Emily Roberts, Alexander Shier, David Shin, Alexander Smith, Grace Smith and Sam Sykes.
