When you're a parent, you just want to do what's best for your kids.

But with so much parenting advice floating around, it can be tough to figure out what exactly "best" means.

According toHeather Shumaker, sometimes doing right by your kids means taking all that conventional wisdom and flipping it on its head.

Shumaker is a national speaker on parenting and early childhood issues. Her latest book is titled, It's OK to Go Up the Slide: Renegade Rules for Raising Confident and Creative Kids.

Shumaker joined us on Stateside to talk about parenting, letting your kids be kids, and the importance of trusting your gut.

Heather Shumaker joins us to talk about her new book and why sometimes you need to drop the parenting rule book and just trust your gut.
