Fixing Division Street In Traverse City

http://ipraudio.interlochen.org/Division_0.mp3

By Peter Payette

Traverse City has been talking for decades about doing something to calm traffic on U.S. Highway 31. The federal highway divides the west part of the city from the downtown. (The road is actually called Division Street there.) From Division, 31 heads east along the bay and separates the downtown from the beach.

To make things a little less treacherous and congested the first plan was to build a bypass and route the traffic south of the city. Then there was talk of a series of roundabouts to slow cars down as they moved through the city.

At the moment there is no plan on the table. Nevertheless, the city is asking voters to give permission to use parkland along U.S. 31 for some solution, to be determined. Harry Burkeholder is a planner at the Land Information Access Association in Traverse City.
