You can't tell from the stands, but most drivers in this race are too young to have licenses, and yet they zip around the clay track of Cherry Raceway at up to 70 miles per hour.

One of the youngest here in Fife Lake tonight is Autumn Beeman of Buckley. She started racing last year when she was 12.

"I just got used to the cars going by me. On my first night I got a few pretty good dents, spun me out," she says.

All the cars are dented and dinged and bear colorful ads for local businesses. The kids speak as proudly of their wipeouts as they do of their wins.

Levi Nickerson, 15, of Grawn, is in his fourth year of racing.

"I rolled over. It was pretty gnarly," he says. "It was actually pretty fun."

Levi's father, Andy Nickerson II, has two sons racing in souped-up Ford Rangers.

"I built the race cars myself, so I was very confident in the cage and everything," he says. "They don't bother me a bit.

"His mother wasn't quite so sure. But I was fine with it."

This is a family affair, and several of the kids have the same numbers on their cars as their fathers. One of those is Taylor Steig, in number 22. Her father owns the track, so he only races at other courses.

On this night, Taylor has just finished her first heat ever, at the age of 13.

"It was fun," she says. "At first I was scared, but after the caution out there, I just put the pedal to the metal. It was really exciting. The only thing I can relate it to is being up in an airplane. It really got my heart pumping."

Taylor hopes to make it to NASCAR. Her favorite driver is Dale Earnhardt Jr., but someone else is her hero.

 "My dad."
