Classical new release: 'Haydn, Ravel, Stravinsky'

The Tesla Quartet has just celebrated its tenth anniversary as an ensemble. It has released its debut album on Orchid Classics. The title indicates the composers whose music is included: "Haydn, Ravel, Stravinsky."

The album features Maurice Ravel's String Quartet in F major, Franz Joseph Haydn's String Quartet in C major (op. 54, no. 2) and Igor Stravinsky's Concertino for String Quartet. Tesla's violinist Ross Snyder also arranged three other Ravel pieces for string quartet: the Menuet sur le nom d'Haydn, the Menuet antique and the Menuet in C-sharp minor.

The Tesla Quartet was founded at the Juilliard School in 2008. They often refer to a quote attributed to their namesake, Nikola Tesla: "Though free to think and act, we are held together, like the stars in the firmament, with ties inseparable. These ties cannot be seen, but we can feel them."

Dr. Amanda Sewell is IPR's music director.
