Great Lakes Center for the Arts

On Saturday, September 21, IPR's music director Amanda Sewell will be meeting listeners at the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra concert at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor.

Violinist Yesong Sophie Lee is just fifteen years old, and she's already a rising star.

She has won first prize in the Yehudi Menuhin International Junior Violin Competition, and she's been a soloist with orchestras including the Seattle Symphony, the London Philharmonia and the Detroit Symphony. She has also appeared on From the Top.

The Sphinx Competition is an annual concerto competition for young American string players of color. The winners of the Sphinx Competition often go on to remarkable careers.

Recently, three Sphinx Laureates gave a recital at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts in Bay Harbor. Violinist Elena Urioste, cellist Gabriel Cabezas and double bassist Xavier Foley performed with pianist  Tom Poster.

This week Classical IPR in Concert features the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus.

Music Director Libor Ondras conducts the program from April 2019. It includes works by Shostakovich, Mozart and John Williams.

Interlochen Public Radio presented a live broadcast from Bay Harbor. 

The Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus opened the 2018-19 season with a performance featuring works by Gwyneth Walker, Joseph Suk and Sergei Prokofiev.

This concert includes the world premiere of Gwyneth Walker's Great Lakes Overture. Libor Ondras conducts.

Classical IPR in Concert airs Friday at 8:00p.m.

This week Classical IPR brings you a concert by the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra and Chorus conducted by Libor Ondras. It's a program they performed this summer at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts.

Dylana Jenson and David Lockington appear with the orchestra to perform the Concerto for Violin and Cello by Johannes Brahms. The concert also includes familiar works by Smetana, Copland and Bernstein. Listen Friday at 8 p.m.

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Interlochen Festival Choir are featured along with broadway star Rachel Gold and violinist Yesong Sophie Lee.

You’ll hear works by Verdi, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Saint-Saëns, Lerner & Loewe, and Tchaikovsky. Listen Friday at 8:00 p.m.

Petoskey native Sarah Lewis shares her favorite works and talks about how each piece has influenced her life. An oboist in the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Lewis will be on stage as the group performs in Bay Harbor at the Great Lakes Center for the Arts Opening Gala on July 7th. That concert will be broadcast live on Classical IPR Saturday night at 8:00 p.m.
