Charles Gounod

Saturday at 1 p.m., join Classical IPR for a recent production of Charles Gounod's "Faust" from Lyric Opera of Chicago.

The production stars Benjamin Bernheim in the title role with Ailyn Perez as Marguerite, Christian Van Horn as Mephistopheles and Edward Parks as Valentin. Emmanuel Villaume conducts.

2018 is the bicentennial of the birth of the French composer Charles Gounod. Best known for his operas such as "Faust" and "Roméo et Juliette," Gounod also composed masses, symphonies and piano pieces. A new album by Roberto Prosseda celebrates Gounod's works for piano, including some that have never been recorded before.

Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, starring soprano Ailyn Pérez and tenor Charles Castronovo as the star-crossed lovers. Plácido Domingo conducts a cast that also features mezzo-soprano Karine Deshayes as Romeo’s page Stéphano, baritone Joshua Hopkins as his friend Mercutio, and bass Kwangchul Youn as Frère Laurent, who unites the couple in hopes of ending the feud between their families.
