Beaver Island

Baroque on Beaver is a multi-day classical music festival held every summer on northern Michigan's Beaver Island. Soloists, chamber ensembles and a festival orchestra gather to perform and interact with audiences.

This week, Classical IPR in Concert presents one of the festival orchestra's concerts, called Baroque on Fire.

There are renewed calls to kill cormorants in the Great Lakes. There are far fewer of these migratory birds left in the region after years of lethal control. But anglers and some congressmen say there are still too many and they eat too many fish. Conflict with these waterbirds is longstanding in coastal communtities where fishing is important and the birds nest by the hundreds or even thousands.

In 2004, there were almost 1,800 double-crested cormorant nests on Goose Island, a strip of land in northern Lake Huron about 500 feet wide and less than a mile long.

All is well on Beaver Island.

Police say Thursday night thieves - or pranksters - returned a statue that had been stolen from outside the Beaver Island Public Library.

Not only was the statue returned under cover of darkness, it was also bolted it back into the ground.

Patrick McGinnity is the director of the Beaver Island District Library.

He says the statue is undamaged, and he thinks police will drop the case.

Baroque on Beaver is held every summer on Beaver Island. The multi-day festival includes many different types of classical music, from Mozart and Beethoven to Gershwin to world premieres by living American composers.

As part of our MI Curious project, Philip Zoutendam asked this question:

What's the story of the Mormon kingdom that was on Beaver Island in the 1800s, and how does it affect the island today?
