Drama, humor, passion, tragedy, love and death - opera has it all.

This week's program features decades of Interlochen students performing music from the operatic stage, including works composed by Aaron Copland, Umberto Giordano, Richard Strauss and Richard Wagner.

Episode details

Richard Wagner, Tannhäuser Overture; Joseph Maddy/National High School Symphony Orchestra (1957)

Aaron Copland, The Promise of Living (from The Tender Land); Craig Dieterich/Interlochen Arts Academy Choir/David Lake (1981-82 academy year)

Richard Strauss, Suite from Der Rosenkavalier; Glenn Block/World Youth Symphony Orchestra (1977)

Umberto Giordano, finale from Andrea Chenier; John Whitwell/High School Symphonic Band (2000)

The archival recordings heard on this program are available thanks in part to the Association for Recorded Sound Collections' Classical Music Preservation Grant, support from our listeners and the Hamer D. and Phyllis C. Shafer Foundation.

Michael Culler provided audio engineering assistance.

Christine Kyprianides provided research support.
