UPDATE: A written response via email from Mayor Michael Estes.
I deeply regret my actions that led to by drunk driving arrest on Oct. 23. My actions are an embarrassment to my family and the office of mayor of Traverse City. I apologize to all I and will accept all the consequences of my actions. I am totally responsible for my bad behavior and apologize to all I have offended. My poor behavior and the appropriate corrections are currently being resolved with the support of my friends and family. My wife, family members, friends, community leaders and many individuals I have never met have all encouraged me to continue as mayor, however, I have made no decisions regarding the mayor ship at this time. Again, I apologize to all and realize forgiveness will take a very long time.

The Mayor of Traverse City was arrested for drunk driving last night. Mike Estes was on his way home from a candidate forum when he was pulled over. The event was held at Central Grade School and was organized by the city neighborhoods. Estes had been there about an hour.
Police stopped him about 10 blocks from the school and say he had swerved across the centerline and was also driving in the bike lane. Police allege his blood alcohol level was .12.
Estes did not return a call from Interlochen Public Radio. The Traverse City Record Eagle quotes him saying “I’m guilty.”
Estes is seeking reelection to a third term. His challenger Rick Buckhalter has never held office.
