A proposal to allow “granny flats” throughout Traverse City is likely to receive a public hearing – but not quite yet. The city planning commission said last night that it wants to see a few changes to the plan before it moves on to the next step.
One issue is what kind of size restriction might be placed on the granny flats – or accessory dwelling units – that could be built onto houses or garages. Another sticking point is whether to mandate a minimum three-month lease.
Commissioner John Serratelli said he’d like to see that minimum extended to six months.
“It's the residents of the community that are currently unable to afford to live in Traverse City that I’m more worried about … not the people coming here to vacation for the summer,” said Serratelli.
The city planning department will work on the suggested changes before the planning commission meets again January 6th.
