'Pinhole' gas leak found on Enbridge's Line 5

David Cassleman

The company running oil through the Straits of Mackinac says it found a gas leak in another part of the same pipeline.

Last week, Enbridge discovered what it calls a “pinhole” defect in Line 5, near Manistique in the Upper Peninsula.

Jason Manshum is an Enbridge spokesperson.

“The actual release volume was too small to measure," Manshum says. "And overtime that pinhole defect only created a small dime-sized stain on the pipe itself."

The leak was found at a connection between two pipe segments that were likely welded together in the 1950s.

Environmental groups say this shows there needs to be stronger safety regulations for the whole pipeline.
