New Release of the Week: Schubert and Busoni

Italian pianist Marco Vincenzi and the Dynamic label bring us a world-premiere album over 100 years in the making.

This album was released in honor of the 150th anniversary of Italian pianist-composer Ferruccio Busoni’s birth. Busoni, a virtuosic if not controversial musician in his day, is today best known for his work editing and transcribing the works of composers including Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In 1888 and 1889, Busoni transcribed a number of Franz Schubert’s compositions, including several orchestral overtures and dance pieces for string quartet. This album is the first complete recording of all of Busoni’s Schubert transcriptions.

Busoni’s ambitious transcriptions are brought to life by Marco Vincenzi, a noted Genoa-born pianist who is in high demand in concert halls across Europe. When not on the stage or in the studio, Vincenzi is a professor of piano at his alma mater, the Genoa Conservatory. He is also director of the Centro Studi Musicali Ferruccio Busoni.

Schubert & Busoni: Complete Transcriptions for Piano Solois barely a month old and has already sold out on Amazon. It may be too late to put on your Christmas list, but it’s not too late to get on the list for the next shipment.
