Our conversation with Ed Terebus. He and his family own Erebus, Michigan's biggest haunted house.
To many in southeast Michigan, it just wouldn’t be Halloween without taking a trip to a haunted house. One estimate figures this corner of Michigan boasts 70 to 100 haunts within a 50-mile radius.
The granddaddy of them all – the biggest in Michigan and one of the biggest in the world – is Erebus. It’s a four-story building in downtown Pontiac and it’s been scary people silly for 17 years.
Ed Terebus' family owns the haunted house. He said to get through the building, visitors will walk more than half a mile past over 100 actors.
“It will take you anywhere from 35 to 45 minutes – depends how fast you’re running,” Terebus said.
Tens of thousands of people will journey through the house each year – and Terebus thinks he knows why:
“It’s kind of like watching a scary movie, but instead of watching a movie, you’re actually engaging in a movie,” he said. “Because over here, we’ve got things that will grab you, bite you, land on top of you. We’re going to put you in a room, slam the door, fill it up six feet six and bury you alive."
He said it's about knowing these scary events will take place while realizing you'll be alive, and laughing, at the end of it.
