Michigan License Plate Named Best In The World

Michigan Department of State

Michigan has the world’s best license plate. The Automobile License Plate Collectors Association voted the Mackinac Bridge plate as this year’s winner.

The design features the bridge against a sunrise. It was designed by Brian Whitfield, a Michigan Department of Transportation employee.

There were 12 plates in the finals. Most were from the U.S.

Gus Oliver, the association’s award coordinator, says the Michigan plate won more than a third of the votes.

"Michigan won with a pretty good lead over the competition," he said.

One voter said it “achieves the magic quality of beauty and legibility combined.”

This is the second time Michigan’s plate was selected as the winner. The state’s bicentennial plate in 1976 also won.
